Adelphi University President Christine M. Riordan has nearly completed her first full year in her role. In a recent interview with Jessica Winans, an Adelphi student and an editor at the Odyssey Online, a website dedicated to giving college students a voice, Dr. Riordan reflected on her experience and shared her vision for Adelphi.

Dr. Riordan spoke about her commitment to diversity and inclusion—two areas that she has studied and written about in her scholarly work.

“It’s not enough for us to be diverse, but we also then need to think through actions to make people feel more included in the community,” she said. She added that diversity and inclusion are some of the top priorities of the University’s new strategic plan and that steps are already being taken to address those areas.

“We have a training program we will be starting in the fall for faculty and staff on implicit bias and explicit bias, and we will be looking at how we incorporate some of that into the student orientation,” she said.

She spoke about her own commitment to student success and some of the initiatives that can help Adelphi students thrive at Adelphi and beyond, such as expanding the number of students who work on campus.

Dr. Riordan also offered advice to students: to be committed to excellence, be change-agile and lead with resilience and optimism.
