Two women who are leaders in education were honored Thursday at a breakfast ceremony hosted by KPMG and ATHENA International at the Mansion at Oyster Bay.

This year’s ATHENA Leadership award went to Christine Riordan, president of Adelphi University in Garden City.

The ATHENA Young Professional Leadership award was presented to Sadia Mehmood, director of development and advancement at the Mary McDowell Friends School in Brooklyn.

The awards are presented annually to women who display professional excellence and community service, and who actively assist women in achieving professional excellence and leadership skills.

In addition to Riordan, finalists for the ATHENA Leadership award were: Linda Armyn, senior vice president of corporate affairs for Bethpage Federal Credit Union; Dr. Maria Torroella Carney, medical director and post-acute services chief for Northwell Health’s division of geriatrics and palliative medicine; and Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director of Options for Community Living.

For the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership award, the other finalists were: Meredith McCaslin, director of development, corporate and event giving for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, and Danielle McKenna, vice president and relationship manager for TD Bank.

“Long Island has a wealth of talented women professionals and, because KPMG is committed to advancing women, we are proud to join with ATHENA to recognize these leaders and their contributions and influence,” Theresa Ahlstrom, a partner in KPMG’s Long Island office and cohost of the ceremony, said in a statement.

This was the 8th time that the ATHENA Leadership awards were presented on Long Island.
